"Rough Math: Focusing on Rogue Waves at Sea," by Ivars Peterson. Science News, 23 November 1996, page 325.

Huge freak waves have often caused calamities at sea. Using mathematical models, researchers have identified mechanisms whereby currents and eddies can "focus" waves into a single, large wave. The ultimate goal of the research is to use the models to identify danger areas where the freak waves are likely to occur so that ships in the area can proceed safely.
