"Where X = savings: What's mathematician worth in real terms? Big bucks to drivers," by David Arnold. Boston Globe, 15 November 1996.
Burt Feinberg, a PhD mathematician who works for the Massachusetts State Rating Bureau, uncovered an error that could save consumers in the state US$200 million. In examining estimates of projected costs by automobile insurers, he found that the formulas being used did not include discounts for things like safe-driving points and airbags. Although insurance companies admitted that this error had resulted in rates being set too high, it was unclear whether they would return the money to their customers.
