For many decades, Canadians have taken clean and available water for granted: for transport and hydropower, for consumption and recreation. But the impact of human activities is clearly visible: many rivers are polluted and their flow regime altered; algal blooms destroy lake ecosystems; invasive species threaten native species assemblages, oceans are overfished.
