Ten European Mathematical Society (EMS) prizes and the Felix Klein Prize were presented at the opening ceremony. In addition to the award presentations, the Congress included plenary lectures, invited and prize winner lectures, poster presentations, minisymposia, roundtables, mathematical films, art exhibits, social events, and the exhibition by publishers, vendors and mathematical societies. The opening ceremony also featured a local group of performers in costume who posed to represent the Rembrandt's painting, "The Night Watch".
