The Fifth European Congress of Mathematics (5ECM) was held July 14-18, 2008, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Ten European Mathematical Society (EMS) prizes and the Felix Klein Prize were presented at the opening ceremony. In addition to the award presentations, the Congress included plenary lectures, invited and prize winner lectures, poster presentations, minisymposia, roundtables, mathematical films, art exhibits, social events, and the exhibition by publishers, vendors and mathematical societies. The opening ceremony also featured a local group of performers in costume who posed to represent the Rembrandt's painting, "The Night Watch".
Ari Laptev, current President of the European Mathematical Society (in photograph to the left), welcomed participants to the 5ECM.
The American Mathematical Society was among the 17 exhibitors. The Society displayed recent publications and public awareness materials, and representatives from the Professional Programs and the Publications divisions of the AMS attended sessions and met with colleagues and authors.
The 5ECM website includes the program, list of participants, and many photographs.
