Pictures from the Exhibits and Meeting Areas

There were 84 exhibitors at the 2009 Joint Mathematics Meetings--professional societies, publishers, software companies, artists and other vendors including nine New Ventures (first-time exhibitors). The Exhibit Hall was a popular place for meeting participants to view the latest publications, textbooks, games, t-shirts, and electronic resources, and attendees also enjoyed meeting friends and colleagues in the Student Hospitality Center, Email Center, and other common areas.

The Mathematical Art Exhibition included works by 36 artists in various media. The inaugural Mathematical Art Exhibition Prizes were awarded: First Prize (US$500) to Goran Konjevod, Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Arizona State University, for his origami work, "Wave (32), 2006;" Second Prize ($300) to Carlo Séquin, Professor of Computer Science, EECS Computer Science Division, University of California, Berkeley, for his sculpture, "Figure-8 Knot, 2007;" and Third Prize ($200) to Robert Fathauer, Tesselations, for "Twice Iterated Knot No. 1, 2008." The Prize "for aesthetically pleasing works that combine mathematics and art" was established in 2008 through an endowment provided to the American Mathematical Society by an anonymous donor who wishes to acknowledge those whose works demonstrate the beauty and elegance of mathematics expressed in a visual art form. Read two articles about Goran Konjevod: "When art and science converge," by Charlsy Panzino, asuwebdevil (ASU's online news service), April 2, 2009, and "Fundamentals of engineering revealed through ancient art," Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering, Arizona State University, March 27, 2009.
