Joint Mathematics Meetings

Call for Submissions for the Joint Mathematics Meetings Exhibition of Mathematical Art

Held as part of the Joint Mathematics Meetings, Boston, January 4-7, 2012

For the ninth year, there will be a Mathematical Art Exhibition during the winter Joint Mathematics Meetings.  The exhibition will be organized and juried by the following:  Robert Fathauer, Tessellations Company; Anne Burns, Department of Mathematics, Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus; Nat Friedman, Department of Mathematics, University at Albany; Reza Sarhangi, Department of Mathematics, Towson University; and Nathan Selikoff, Digital Awakening Studios.

This exhibition will be held in the exhibit hall, in the Hynes Convention Center. Over five thousand professional mathematicians typically attend this meeting, so this is an excellent opportunity to get your work seen by people who will appreciate it.  Past exhibitions have been very well received, and the AMS and MAA feel the art exhibition has become a valuable addition to the meeting.

We plan to publish a catalog to accompany the exhibition. SIGMAA-ARTS, a special interest group of the MAA, has generously offered to underwrite the cost of doing so, as they did last year.

For the fourth year, there will be cash awards for the top three artworks picked by a panel of judges. This panel will be different and independent from the panel of jurors that select the artworks. The Mathematical Art Exhibition Awards will be given and announced at the Joint Mathematics Meetings. First, Second and Third place winners will be awarded (US$500, US$300, and US$200 respectively) for aesthetically pleasing works that combine mathematics and visual art.

Mathematicians/artists interested in exhibiting their works should plan on registering for and attending the conference if one or more of their works are accepted. Note that there will also be a paper session at the meeting on connections between mathematics and the arts, organized by Douglas Norton.

If you would like to submit your work, please visit the submission page on the web site, http://gallery.bridgesmathart.org/. The amount of space available for this year's art exhibition is twice what was available last year. As a result, three submissions will be accepted per artist, as opposed to two last year.

Submissions are due by October 15, 2012.  Notification of acceptance will be made via e-mail by November 15, 2012 .

Artworks will not be insured while on display, though there will be security provided by the conference.  The artist must assume full responsibility for theft or damage.
