Housing Warning

Please beware of aggressive housing bureaus that target potential participants of a meeting. They are sometimes called "room poachers" or "room-block pirates" and these companies generally position themselves as a meeting's housing bureau, convincing participants to unknowingly book outside the official room blocks. They call people who they think will more likely than not attend a meeting and lure them with room rates that are significantly less than the published group rate---for a limited time only. People who find this offer tempting may hand over their credit card data, believing they have scored a great rate and their housing is a done deal. Unfortunately, this often turns out to be the start of a long, costly nightmare. Note that some of these room poachers create fake websites on which they represent themselves as the organizers of the meeting and include links to book rooms, etc. The only official website for this meeting is and one that has the official AMS logo. These housing bureaus are not affiliated with the American Mathematical Society or any of its meetings, in any way. The AMS would never call anyone to solicit reservations for a meeting. The only way to book a room at a rate negotiated for an AMS Sectional Meeting is via a listing on these pages or in the Notices of the AMS. The AMS cannot be responsible for any damages incurred as a result of hotel bookings made with unofficial housing bureaus.

Registration and Meeting Information

In an effort to spread the cost of the sectional meetings more equitably among all who attend and hence help keep registration fees low, you must be registered for a sectional meeting in order to submit an abstract for that meeting. You will be prompted to register on the Abstracts Submission Page.

Registration Fees (no difference for registration during the meeting):

Registration fees help support a wide range of activities associated with planning, organizing, and conducting these meetings.

In the event that your abstract is not accepted or you have to cancel your participation in the program due to unforeseen circumstances, your registration fee will be reimbursed.

Register online and follow these steps:

  1. After clicking on "Register," you will be asked to enter your email address, and then log in to your account, or create a web account if you do not already have one. This only requires a username (email address), password, name, and address. If you already have a web account with us, please log in with your username (email address) and password. Please make sure that the email address that you are using is current, as we will send any pertinent updates to this email.
  2. Once you create and/or login to the account, continue on to register for the meeting. The same username and password may be used to register for all future sectional meetings.

Registering someone else: If you are planning to register someone else, verify that that person has an AMS web account. If they do not have a web account, please have them go to Register for a web account, or email AMS Customer Service to create one. You do not have to be a member to have an AMS web account. It is also possible that an AMS member does not have a web account, if they have never shopped at our bookstore, or registered online for a meeting. Ask for the email address associated with their web account, and use this to register them. When you click on the registration form, choose "Register Someone Else." Please first login with your personal AMS web account. If you do not have one, please create one. Enter the email address associated with your account, and then your password. If will ask you if you want to register someone else, or yourself. Click "someone else," and enter the email address belonging to the person’s web account. Click on the green box that says "Check." Choose the person, and continue the registration.

We hope that you will find this system easy to use. Once your information is in our system, you will not have to enter your information for any future sectional meetings, unless it has changed, thus making your registration faster and easier. Cancellations: Participants may cancel registrations made in advance by emailing the Mathematics Meetings Service Bureau. 100% refunds will be issued for any advance registrations cancelled by the end of the day (11:59 EDT) on October 21, 2022. After this date, no refunds will be issued for this meeting. However, if the AMS cancels this meeting or converts it to a virtual meeting with different fees, 100% refunds will be issued to every registered participant.

Room Locations On-site: The buildings and classrooms on campus will be identified at a later date. Special Sessions and Contributed Paper Sessions will take place in nearby classrooms on campus. Registration Desk: The registration desk will be open on Saturday, October 22, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday, October 23, 7:30 am to 12:00 pm. Please note that only online registration will be available during the meeting. If you register by October 19, you may pick up your pre-printed name badge at the desk. After this date, please show your receipt at the registration desk, and there will be materials to make a badge.

Well-Being Protocols

Please note that the AMS will practice health and safety protocols that reflect our commitment to the well-being of all participants at the AMS sectional meetings this fall. Everyone attending the meeting in person (including staff and volunteers) must be fully vaccinated or be willing to attest to a negative PCR COVID-19 test. A PCR test must be taken within 72 hours of your arrival to the meeting if you are not fully vaccinated. Please be prepared in the event that you are asked to show proof of a negative test result. A PCR test is not necessary if you are fully vaccinated.

During check-in, everyone will be asked to complete a brief form to attest to their current wellness. We ask that all participants wear a mask while attending sessions, except while actively eating or drinking.

Child Care Grants

The AMS will provide a limited number of reimbursement grants of US\$125 per family to help with the cost of child care for registered participants at the meeting. The funds may be used for any form of child care that frees a parent to participate more fully in the meeting. Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, one per family, and one per season (i.e. Spring or Fall), the latter depending on the amount of grants available. Registration for the meeting as well as membership in the AMS is required to apply for this program.

In all its activities, the AMS seeks to foster an atmosphere that encourages the free expression and exchange of ideas. Harassment is a form of misconduct that undermines the integrity of the AMS, and its activities and missions.

The AMS will make every effort to maintain an environment that is free of harassment, even though it does not control the behavior of third parties. A commitment to a welcoming environment is expected of all participants of AMS activities, including mathematicians, students, guests, staff, contractors and exhibitors, and participants in scientific sessions and social events. To this end, the AMS will include a statement concerning its expectations towards maintaining a welcoming environment in registration materials for the Sectional Meetings, and has put in place a mechanism for reporting violations. Violations may be reported confidentially and anonymously to 855-282-5703 or on the website. The reporting mechanism ensures the respect of privacy while alerting the AMS to the situation.

This meeting will take place on the campus of the University of Utah, located approximately 10 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City, Utah.

By Air: Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is about 9 miles from the campus and the most convenient air travel choice. By car, it takes less than 20 minutes to get to the University of Utah from Salt Lake City International Airport, however it can take longer during rush hours. Please visit the Salt Lake City International Airport website for a list of airlines and cities with daily direct flights.Anyone traveling via air or train should purchase refundable tickets or get trip insurance to cover any unforeseen cancellations.

There are several options available for transportation to and from the airport. Several area hotels and motels offer courtesy shuttle service for guests traveling to and from Salt Lake City International Airport. It is recommended that guests make transportation arrangements with their hotel or motel 72 hours in advance of traveling. Please inquire with your hotel in advance.

Directions to Campus: For directions to campus, please enter 201 Presidents Circle, Salt Lake City, UT 84112 into your GPS or web browser.

By Train: Amtrak is the regional rail system located 3.8 miles from campus. The Salt Lake City Amtrak Station is located at 340 South 600 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84101. Anyone traveling via air or train should purchase refundable tickets or get trip insurance to cover any unforeseen cancellations.

Travel Grants

The AMS, with funding from a private gift, will be accepting applications for partial travel support for doctoral students (at North American institutions) who plan to attend one of the Fall 2022 AMS Sectional Meetings.

Each grant, if awarded, will provide \$250 in partial support of attendance at one of the 2022 Fall Sectional Meetings.

It is the intention of the AMS to encourage each student's home institution to match the funds provided in support of the travel. Applications will be accepted only from doctoral students in mathematics. No person may receive a sectional meeting travel grant more than once.

Local Transportation

Walking, biking, public transportation, ride share, and personal cars are recommended to get around campus and Downtown Salt Lake City.

  • By Bike: Salt Lake City’s bike sharing system includes 47 stations and hundreds of bikes. See more information here.

  • Light Rail: Red Line service to downtown in 15 minutes. Cost: \$2.50 one-way.

The average high temperature for October is in the mid 60’s Fahrenheit and the average low is in the mid 40’s. Visitors should be prepared for warm to cool weather and check weather forecasts in advance of their arrival.

Visa regulations are continually changing for travel to the United States. Visa applications may take from three to four months to process and require a personal interview, as well as specific personal information. International participants should view the important information about traveling to the U.S. found here. If you discover you do need a visa, the National Academies website provides these tips for successful visa applications:

  1. Visa applicants are expected to provide evidence that they are intending to return to their country of residence. Therefore, applicants should provide proof of “binding” or sufficient ties to their home country or permanent residence abroad. This may include documentation of the following: Family ties in home country or country of legal permanent residence, property ownership, bank accounts, or an employment contract or statement from employer stating that the position will continue when the employee returns.
  2. Visa applications are more likely to be successful if done in a visitor’s home country than in a third country.
  3. Applicants should present their entire trip itinerary, including travel to any countries other than the United States, at the time of their visa application.
  4. Include a letter of invitation from the meeting organizer or the US host, specifying the subject, location and dates of the activity, and how travel and local expenses will be covered.
  5. If travel plans will depend on early approval of the visa application, specify this at the time of the application.
  6. Provide proof of professional scientific and/or educational status (students should provide a university transcript).
