AMS, ASA, MAA and SIAM Workshop on

Vertical Integration of Research and Education
in the Mathematical Sciences

May 3–4, 2002

Hyatt Regency Reston Hotel, Reston, Virginia

Doctoral departments in mathematics, applied mathematics, and/or statistics are encouraged to send representatives to an important workshop on NSF's Vertical Integration of Research and Education in the Mathematical Sciences (VIGRE) program. The primary goal of the workshop is to bring together representatives of the current VIGRE-holding mathematical sciences departments, representatives of non-VIGRE-holding departments, and representatives of the Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) at the NSF to share information on the success and challenges of the VIGRE initiative and plans for its future. The program will begin in the early afternoon on Friday and be completed late Saturday afternoon. The current program is available for your review.

Funding for the workshop is anticipated through the DMS, and the workshop is being organized jointly by AMS, ASA, MAA and SIAM. If funded, the housing and meal expenses of representatives to the workshop from sixty to seventy departments will be covered from the grant. The cost of travel to the workshop will be the responsibility of the departments.

Please note that all registered participants will be AUTOMATICALLY considered for local support, i.e. housing and meals, on a "first come first serve" basis. For now, support is limited to two representatives per department, but this limit will be revisited once the level of registration is clearer.

All participants must register with the Mathematics Meetings Service Bureau (MMSB) by April 12 to be assured of consideration for local support from the anticipated NSF grant. To register, please send email to and give the following information:

full name, address, phone #, affiliation (for badge), and email address (if different than the one appearing in your message)

An acknowledgment of your registration will be sent to you by email from the MMSB.

Participants should make their sleeping room reservations directly with the Hyatt Regency Reston Hotel and request the "Mathematical Association of America" discount.
