Calculating pi out to enormous numbers of digits is a sport pursued by number crunchers the world over. "But what if," the author asks, "for some nefarious or merely impenetrable reason, you just have a yen to know, say, the one-billionth digit of pi?" This brief piece describes recent efforts to address this problem.
