This article reports on the decision by the National Science Foundation tocontinue its funding of the two main mathematics institutes in the UnitedStates and to establish a new one. The two existing institutes are theMathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, California, and theInstitute for Mathematics and its Applications at the University of Minnesota.The new one is the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics at the UniversityCalifornia, Los Angeles. These institutes play an important role in keepingmathematicians abreast of the latest developments in the field.
