"Representing the World in a Computer": Review of The Nature of Mathematical Modeling, by Neil Gershenfeld. Reviewed by Brian Sleeman. Science, 6 August 1999, page 842.

This book provides an overview of a wide variety of mathematical methods and techiques which can be used in modeling scientific problems. The author presents a series of problems in which he describes these methods and techniques and how they should be applied. The book covers traditional fare, such as classical numerical models, as well as newer ideas like wavelets, simulated annealing, and genetic algorithms. According to the reviewer, this book "should be kept within easy reach of anyone who wants to build computer models to help understand the world around us."
