"Duchamp and Poincare Renew an Old Acquaintance," by Barry Cipra.Science, 26 November 1999, pages 1668-9.
A recent conference, entitled "Methods of Understanding in Art and Science: TheCase of Duchamp and Poincare," explored mathematical influence on the artworld. Organizer and artist Rhonda Shearer recently found evidence that HenriPoincare, father of chaos theory, may have provided inspiration for severalworks of modernist Marcel Duchamp. Though art historians are skeptical ofShearer's theories, some are reexamining conventional interpretations ofDuchamp's pieces in light of her discoveries.
