"U.S. Census 2000: An Update," by Kenneth Prewitt. Science, 12 January 2001.
In this editorial, U.S. Census Bureau director Kenneth Prewitt claims that it may be possible to bring the current census count, based on enumeration, closer to the true count. The method for doing so still needs to be evaluated, but even if it proves to give more accurate results, Prewitts warns that politics could stand in the way of the revised numbers being released. If politics trumps science, he says, not only could it put political and economic decision-making out of focus, but it could also cast a shadow over all U.S. science.
