This article profiles Bob Moses, a civil rights leader and founder ofthe Algebra Project. Started in the early 1980s in Cambridge, Massachusetts,the Algebra Project now serves 10,000 students in 28 cities. The approachof the project is to get students to experience mathematical concepts inconcrete ways before moving to symbolic representation. "You canactually see what you are talking about, instead of just thinking aboutit in your head," one student is quoted as saying.
