"Particle Physics Braces for the Next Big Thing," by James Glanz. New YorkTimes, 21 November 2000.
Construction is under way for two new tools to help particle physicists fill inthe gaps of the Standard Model of atomic structure. The building of the LargeHadron Collider and Atlas particle detector in Europe, and the renovation ofthe Tevatron accelerator in the US, will help physicists detect the smallestbuilding blocks of matter. In particular, physicists hope to see evidence ofthe elusive Higgs field, thought to give molecules their mass.
