Science inspires art inspires science again. Artist M.C. Escher, inspired by a mathematical article about symmetry, created artworks by tiling circles with triangles whose angles add up to less than 180 degrees---in other words, Escher created hyperbolic tilings of the circle. In turn, scientists today study Escher's artwork to better understand hyperbolic tilings. Douglas Dunham, of University of Minnesota at Duluth, writes computer programs to transform one tiling pattern to another.
