"A Better Golf Ball," by Jim Holt. The New York Times Magazine, 9 December 2001.
This "Year in Ideas" issue includes "A Better Golf Ball." Noting that a golf ball presents a complex fluid dynamics challenge, Holt examines Steve Ogg's design for a golf ball with an interlocking tubular lattice network of hexagons and pentagons that replaces the traditional dimples. This geometric design achieves 100 percent surface coverage and flies farther than any other traditional ball tested---and, meets all U.S.G.A. specifications. PGA tour players are reportedly looking forward to use the new product, which is expected in pro shops nationwide this spring.
