This "Year in Ideas" issue includes "Transcending Equations," in which StephenWolfram (inventor of Mathematica software) asks, "Why should we rely onmathematical abstractions to understand the world?" Rather, he thinks that weshould think of nature as following simple non-mathematical rules that can besimulated on a computer. Wolfram plans to publish his discoveries in a booktitled A New Kind of Science.
