"Rare Throwback," by John Allen Paulos,, 1 June 2002.

Mathematician John Allen Paulos, who writes the monthly "Who's Counting" columnfor, wrote an admiring tribute to the late Stephen JayGould. "Stephen Jay Gould, the eminent evolutionary biologist and stylishessayist who died last month, used mathematics to elucidate many ideas, both inand out of science." Paulos reminded us of how Gould brought mathematics intohis essays on baseball, bacteria and complexity of life, medians, cancer, I.Q.testing, and many other topics. "He was a rare throwback to a less myopicallyspecialized era."
