This book is about the work of those who have held the Lucasian professorshipin mathematics at the University of Cambridge. The first was Isaac Barrow in1663; currently it is Stephen Hawking. Others on the list are Newton, Babbage, and Dirac. Reading this "staggering book" is a major enterprise, thereviewer writes. But the reader's reward is a journey "through a magnificenthistory of mathematics and physics, nothing less than humanity's constanteffort to understand the universe."
