Burt Feinberg, a PhD mathematician who works for the Massachusetts State RatingBureau, uncovered an error that could save consumers in the state US$200 million.In examining estimates of projected costs by automobile insurers, he found thatthe formulas being used did not include discounts for things like safe-drivingpoints and airbags. Although insurance companies admitted that this error hadresulted in rates being set too high, it was unclear whether they would returnthe money to their customers.
