Capillary action is governed by highly nonlinear equations. Some recently discovered formal consequences of these equations are at variance with predictions from formal expansions, and experiments on NASA and Mir flights were conducted to determine what actually occurs. This article sketches the history of the problems, some of the current theory, and relevant experimental results. (pp. 770)
