André Weil and the Foundations of Algebraic Geometry

Michel Raynaud

André Weil's proof of the Riemann hypothesis for the zeta function of curves over finite fields required Weil to redo the foundations of algebraic geometry. Raynaud outlines the nonintuitive approach that Weil took and explains how this approach fit into Weil's study of the zeta function and group varieties.
