Free boundary problems in partial differential equations are those in
which a part of the boundary of the domain is unknown in advance. The author
gives examples to show how the theory of these problems has concrete
applications, such as in electrophotography, chemical vapor deposition, coating
flows, and tumor growth.
H. D. Kloosterman and His Work
Tonny A. Springer
The year 2000 marks the centenary of the birth of the late H. D.
Kloosterman. Although Kloosterman's work in number theory, modular forms, and
representation theory was done long ago, its significance has evolved over the
years and the work remains relevant for contemporary mathematics.
