October 2011 is the one-hundredth anniversary of the birth of the eminent differential geometer Shiing-Shen Chern. He was beloved both for his mathematics and his warm personality. His student S.-T. Yau has organized a memorial article for Chern in this issue of the Notices. This month we also feature an article by Frank Quinn that presents an innovative approach to mathematics education.
