Fellowships / Postdocs/early career, Mathematical scientists/faculty, Institutions and Programs

The School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study welcomes applications from mathematicians and theoretical computer scientists at the post-doctoral and mid-to-senior career levels, and strongly encourages applications from women and minorities. Stipends, on-campus housing, and other resources are available for periods of 4-11 months for individual researchers in all mathematical subject areas. Successful candidates will be free to devote themselves full-time to research. The School supports approximately 85 Members per year in the following four categories:

Post-Doctoral Membership (~30 positions)

For those not more than 5 years from their PhD, about 30 stipendiary post-doctoral memberships of 1 or 2 years duration are available in all areas of mathematics and theoretical computer science.

Post-Doctoral Joint Positions (~10 positions)

Post-doctoral applicants in computer science and discrete mathematics may apply for a two-year position offered jointly with Princeton University Department of Computer Science, DIMACS at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, or Simons Foundation Collaboration on Algorithms and Geometry. Post-doctoral applicants in all areas of mathematics may apply for a Veblen Research Instructorship – a three-year position in partnership with Princeton University Department of Mathematics. Successful applicants spend 2 years at Princeton University, where they have a responsibility for both teaching and research, and 1 year at the IAS to concentrate on research. Candidates for joint positions must apply to both the IAS and to the other institution.

Mid-to-Senior Career Level Memberships (~20 positions)

Mid-to-senior career-level memberships are usually 1 year in duration, but can be for just one term. These are available to researchers in all areas of mathematics and theoretical computer science at any career stage (5 years or more from PhD), including those on sabbatical leave. Limited financial support is available to those without sufficient external funds. In addition, about 8 stipendiary von Neumann Fellowships are available to distinguished mid-career mathematicians and theoretical computer scientists, 5 to 15 years from their PhD.

Special-Year Program Membership (~25 positions)

About 25 memberships are available to those of all career stages who are interested in actively participating in the Special-Year Program. These may be stipendiary or non-stipendiary. They are usually 1 year in duration, but can be for just one term. In 2019-2020, there will be a special-year program on Optimization, Statistics, and Theoretical Machine Learning led by Sanjeev Arora of Princeton University.
