Abstract:

We prove the following theorem. A finitely generated group $\Gamma$ is amenable if and only if $\boldsymbol {1}\neq \boldsymbol {0}$ in $K_0(T(\Gamma ))$, the algebraic $K$-theory group of its translation algebra.
