Annual Survey of the Mathematical Sciences

The Annual Survey of the Mathematical Sciences collects information each year from departments in the mathematical sciences at four-year colleges and universities in the United States. The data collected on

  • New Ph.D. recipients (dissertations, gender, race/ethnicity and citizenship, and employment plans)
  • Faculty (size, recruitment, hiring, and salaries)
  • Graduate students (enrollment status, gender, and citizenship)
  • Degrees awarded (Ph.D., master's, and bachelor's)
  • Course enrollments (graduate and undergraduate)

provides invaluable information to the mathematical sciences community. Specialized peer group analyses are used by department chairs to gain support from administrators for program expansions and faculty salary negotiations.

New Ph.D. Starting Salaries

  • Report on New Doctoral Recipients and Starting Salaries of New Doctoral Recipients provides an update to the information on new doctoral recipients reported in the Preliminary Report on New Doctoral Recipients. This report is based on data, including starting salaries, from the new doctoral recipients who responded to a follow-up questionnaire, the Employment Experiences of New Doctoral Recipients (EENDR). The EENDR is sent in early October to the individual new doctoral recipients whose addresses are known. The published report appears in the August issue of the Notices of the AMS. Read the current report (formerly the Second Report).

Recruitment & Hiring

  • Academic Recruitment and Hiring Report presents information about the number of full-time faculty positions under recruitment and filled at the undergraduate and graduate level.  Information on recruitment and hiring is gathered on a questionnaire sent to all U.S. departments of mathematics and to all U.S. doctorate-granting departments of statistics or biostatistics. The published report appears in the May issue of the Notices of the AMS. Read the current report (formerly part of the Third Report).

Faculty Salaries

  • Faculty Salaries Report presents salary data for tenured and tenure-track faculty members in U.S. departments in the mathematical sciences. This report is based on information collected from a questionnaire distributed to doctorate, master’s and bachelor’s granting departments in June. The published report appears in the March issue of the Notices of the AMS. Read the current report (formerly the First Report, Part II).

Departmental Profile

  • Departmental Profile Report presents information about faculties and instructional programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, including data on fall course enrollments, graduate students, degrees awarded, and department faculty. Information about departments is gathered on a questionnaire mailed to all departments in doctoral and master’s granting departments and to a sample from bachelor’s granting departments. The published report appears in the November issue of the Notices of the AMS. Read the current report (formerly the Third Report).

Doctoral Degrees Conferred

  • Doctoral Degrees Conferred, a list of the names of the doctoral recipients and their thesis titles, is published in the August of the Notices of the AMS
