1998 Mathematics Awareness Week 1998 Mathematics Awareness Week
April 26-May 2, 1998 is
MathematicsAwareness Week. This year's theme is
Mathematics and Imaging.
Here are some images from the Mathematics Awareness Week Poster.
Captions for the four baboon images (from the top):
- Original
- Wavelet 300:1 compression (preserves all but fine structure)
- Wavelet 30:1 compression (preserves fine structure of bristles)
- Residual
Explanation:
The original image is the sum of the three. Each pulls outdifferent features of the original. We can think of the images as being synthesized by three different instruments, in a way similar to a musicalorchestration where the final sound is the sum of the notes from each instrument. This mathematical transcription is useful for a more efficient and accuratestorage and processing of imaging data, but also provides tools for denoisingand identifying structure in images. For example, it can sharpen detail inmedical images, such as MRI, and be used to identify particular objectsfor diagnostic purposes.
Mathematics Awareness Week is sponsored by the
