"Quantum Computing," by Lov K. Grover. The Sciences, July/August 1999,pages 24-30.
Lov Grover describes how quantum physics may hold the key to the next computer revolution. Present day computers can only process one operationat a time, but some researchers believe that by manipulating quantumstates, they may be able to create a quantum computer capable of carrying outmany simulataneous operations. In this article, Grover reports on the progressand the potential obstacles to creating the quantum computer, and describes how he and others have already produced powerful quantum algorithms that wouldrun on such a machine.
