"Good-Bye Pythagoras?", by Elizabeth Greene. Chronicle of Higher Education, 6 October 2000.
This article presents opinions from both proponents and opponents of ethnomathematics---mathematics from a cultural perspective. Jim Barta at Utah State says, "We're looking at multiple perspectives to help us better understand human beings and relationships between being human and mathematics." Skeptics counter that time spent teaching ethnomathematics would be better spent teaching a deeper understanding of more traditional mathematics.
