"Roboselection": Review of Evolutionary Robotics: The Biology, Intelligence, and Technology of Self-Organizing Machines, by Stefano Nolfi and DarioFloreano. Reviewed by David B. Fogel. American Scientist, July-August2001.
The book under review summarizes case studies in the growing field of"evolutionary robotics", in which "genetic algorithms, a branch of evolutionarycomputation, is often used to optimize robotic control architectures. Thesearchitectures often take the form of an artificial neural network, amathematical model based loosely on the way biological neural networks arebelieved to operate". The book describes experiments with a variety of robots, and the reviewer states that the book "will be welcomed by those interested inbuilding complex robots or simple robots doing complex things."
