"Top Young Problem Solvers Vie for Quiet Glory" by Dana Mackenzie. Science, July 27, 2001, pp. 596-599.
Mackenzie describes the recent International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), held in the Washington, D.C. area, including a summary of how the U.S. team trained for the event and a short sidebar on Reid Barton. By winning a gold medal at the IMO this year, Barton became the first person to win gold medals at four Olympiads. One problem from this year's exam is included in the article (Barton's solution appears on p. 79 of the August 6 issue). Next year's IMO is in Glasgow, Scotland.
