"Beauty is in the Wallet of the Beholder," by John Allen Paulos. abcnews.com, 4 May 2003.
Paulos introduces a game (also discussed in his forthcoming book, A Mathematician Plays the Stock Market) that, in addition to other mathematical tools ranging from network theory to fractals, can shed light on "countless situations---not just the stock market---[that] require that we anticipate the actions of many other people." Such situations include politics, war, business, and everyday life, and including investors and beauty contest judges.
