"Mystery remains as journal withdraws paper," by John Whitfield. Nature, 11 December 2003.
Whitfield traces the story and controversy surrounding the acceptance for publication of a paper by Elin Oxenhielm, a 22-year old postgraduate student at the University of Stockholm, Sweden, who claims to have solved the second part of Hilbert's 16th problem. The journal Nonlinear Analysis (Elsevier) accepted the paper after it was reviewed by one mathematician, but the editors have now withdrawn publication of the paper, which others have considered seriously flawed.
