"Turning a Snowball Inside out," by Ivars Peterson. Science News, 7 February 2004.
Mathematician Stan Wagon (Macalester College) won an award at the 14thInternational Snow Sculpture Championship in Breckenridge, Colorado, for hiscarved creation that showed a sphere being turned inside out. Peterson providesa mathematical explanation to accompany the photograph of the creation: "Alattice structure of struts and bands represented a sphere's inside surface andsolid material represented its outside surface. The resulting form elegantlycaptured both the tension and the swirling flow evident at the midpoint of acomplex transformation." Wagon's team included software engineer Dan Schwalbe, computer science student Alex Kozlowski, mathematician John M. Sullivan, andcomputer scientist Carlo H. Séquin.
