"Math Puzzlers Here for Prime Time," by Bill Dietrich. SeattleTimes, 14 August 1996.
This article reports on a symposium held in Seattle in August 1996 to celebratethe 100th anniversary of the proof of the Prime Number Theorem. The theoremwas proved independently by the French mathematicians Hadamard and de la ValleePoussin. They were following a plan mapped out by the legendary Germanmathematician Riemann, who also set forth a conjecture, now known as theRiemann Hypothesis, which is connected to questions about the distribution ofprime numbers among the integers. The article discusses present-day efforts toprove the Riemann Hypothesis and discusses the seemingly mysterious connectionof abstract mathematics to practical applications.
