The transformer that provides electricity to the AMS building in Providence went down on Sunday, April 22. The restoration of our email, website, AMS Bookstore and other systems is almost complete. We are currently running on a generator but overnight a new transformer should be hooked up and (fingers crossed) we should be fine by 8:00 (EDT) Wednesday morning. This issue has affected selected phones, which should be repaired by the end of today. No email was lost, although the accumulated messages are only just now being delivered so you should expect some delay.
Thanks for your patience.
"Point System," by Edward Rothstein. A review of A Tour of the Calculus, by David Berlinski. New York Times Book Review, 25 February 1996, page 16.
"Calculus for the Literacy, if Not for the Numbers," by Richard Bernstein. A review of A Tour of the Calculus, by David Berlinski. New York Times, 7 February 1996.
According to Rothstein's review, David Berlinski is an "idiosyncratic tour guide" of the calculus, producing a book in which "the discipline of a well-trained mathematical mind is combined with the indulgences of an overeager novelist." Bernstein calls the book a "playful, witty, highly literate effort to guide the mathematically uninitiated through the mysteries of the calculus." Although Bernstein finds the book's mathematical explanations difficult to follow at times, he says Berlinski is effective at communicating his sense of wonder at the remarkable achievements of calculus. Rothstein notes that Berlinski's book will "begin to open this mathematical universe to the lay reader."
