Morrey's principal academic appointment was at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1933 until his retirement in 1977. His research included work in area of surfaces, calculus of variations, and elliptic partial differential equations. His work led to the solutions of the 19th and 20th problems of David Hilbert. (Read "About Hilbert's address and his 23 mathematical problems.") Morrey was a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
