Mathematicians make heavy and frequent use of electronic mail for communicationrelated to their scientific and professional activities. The AmericanMathematical Society is committed to working for wide and effective access tothe Internet. This valuable tool would be threatened if universities werereduced to bargaining with private communications corporations for the rates tobe charged. The Society and other organizations devoted to research shouldwork to secure governmental guarantees of availability of e-mail services at anaffordable rate.
