Josephine M. Mitchell and Lowell I. Schoenfeld Gardens Dedication

At a special ceremony on May 16, 2003 the AMS dedicated the Josephine M. Mitchell and Lowell I. Schoenfeld Gardens. Executive Director John Ewing read a tribute to the two mathematicians and unveiled the plaque that dedicates the gardens and honors their bequest to the American Mathematical Society. Members of the Executive Council, Board of Trustees and staff attended the dedication in Providence, Rhode Island.

Josephine Mitchell's field was several complex variables and Lowell Schoenfeld's field was analytic number theory. Their work spanned half a century, and continues to live on through their papers, reviews, students, book collection--recently sent to Charles University in the Czech Republic, where recent floods destroyed the entire library--and bequest to the American Mathematical Society. Their generous gift will be part of the Society's Endowment, with its income to be used to support mathematics and scholarship.
