Quantum Ergodicity in Theorems and Pictures
Semyon Dyatlov
One classical notion, present in many chaotic systems, is that of ergodicity. A classical system is ergodic if almost all classical trajectories equidistribute. This article focuses on the corresponding topic in quantum chaos: macroscopic behavior of high energy eigenfunctions for systems with ergodic or more strongly chaotic classical dynamics.
Random Phenomena with Fractal-like Features
Patricia Alonso Ruiz
My brother and I are walking along the seashore and arrive at a stony formation. The salty water that passes through the rocks creates tiny lagoons, where seaweed seems to find its ecosystem. My fascination grows when we discover how the seaweed seems to randomly climb and dry on the rock, creating a fractal pattern.
Shape Optimization for Covering Problems
Ernesto G. Birgin and Antoine Laurain
Shape optimization is the study of optimization problems where the variable is a geometric object. The shape optimization viewpoint on the covering problems opens up new perspectives as the tools of shape calculus become available, which allows us to numerically handle the case of a large number of balls.
