Comments regarding financial support
All graduate assistantships come with a tuition waiver, where the student pays $25 in tuition per semester, plus student fees. Graduate assistantships require a 20 hour per week work commitment to the department. First-year students typically work in the department's tutoring lab and assist faculty members with the teaching of a course (grading or meeting a once weekly session of a precalculus review course). Well qualified second-year students may be selected to teach their own courses. Larger stipends are paid to second-year students selected to teach.
Comments regarding outcomes students are preparing for, and how successful have they been
The nature and breadth of the curriculum allows students to enter jobs in industry or to enter Ph.D. programs in Applied Mathematics.

Comments regarding outcomes students are preparing for, and how successful have they been
With a master?s degree in Actuarial Science from BU MET, you are well-positioned to work in a variety of traditional and non-traditional actuarial roles. Actuarial skills are valued in any field in which strong abilities in predictive risk analysis, mathematics, and statistics are essential to developing business strategies. Though actuaries work in a variety of areas, they are most notably integral in the insurance industry. Their analytic skills and ability to quantify risk and uncertainty make actuaries invaluable to insurance and financial teams, and essential to health insurance, life insurance, property and casualty insurance (automobile and homeowners insurance), and pension and health consulting firms. Actuaries are also employed by government agencies, accounting firms, banks, and financial services companies.

Our MA students are not guaranteed funding. They can sign up to be graders, which pays between $500-$1000 a semester depending on number of assignments. On occasion, we will have Teaching Assistantships open up, which pay $6000, but theses are few and far between.
Comments regarding outcomes students are preparing for, and how successful have they been
Students in our MA program typically go on to enroll in PhD programs after leaving. They are quite successful in finding a path.

Special requirements or purposes of the program
A PhD student must complete 16 courses, with a grade of "B-" or higher, for the PhD. At most, four of the courses may be transferred from other institutions. If the PhD student is admitted to the post-MA PhD program, then eight courses are usually required. All course must be MA 500+, with at least half being MA 700+.
PhD students in Pure & Applied Mathematics must also take the MA Preliminary Exam and pass it at the PhD level. This is typically completed at the end of your first year. Later on, each student need to complete their PhD qualifying exam. This oral examination is three hours long and covers two areas of graduate study as well as a specialized topic within one of these areas. The examination in each of the two main areas is based on at least a full year of 700-level coursework. Currently, the department offers examinations in the following areas: algebra, algebraic geometry, applied mathematics, analysis, differential equations, differential geometry, differential and algebraic topology, dynamical systems, functional analysis, number theory, probability, logic, partial differential equations, and numerical analysis. The Qualifying Examination must be completed within the first three years of the student?s graduate-level studies. A detailed handout on the Qualifying Examination is given to entering graduate students.
Internships can be done during the summer. Once a student has fulfilled their coursework requirements and passed their exams, internships can be done during the Fall and Spring semesters, as well.

Additional information
To be considered for admission into the M.S. in Mathematics program, students must have completed single and multivariable calculus, introductory linear algebra, an introduction to proof-based mathematics (similar to our MAT 3100), introductory real analysis, and introductory modern/abstract algebra. To be considered for admission into the M.S. in Statistics and Applied Mathematics, students must have completed single and multivariable calculus plus lower-division coursework covering linear algebra, differential equations, and elementary statistics or data science. Experience with coding is also strongly recommended. Upper-division applied mathematics and statistics coursework with grades of B or higher is strongly recommended. Additional undergraduate level coursework relevant to your chosen degree with grades of B or higher is strongly encouraged. Students showing great promise but lacking one or more of these courses may be considered for conditional admission.

Comments regarding outcomes students are preparing for, and how successful have they been
In recent years, our graduates have obtained tenure-track faculty positions at local community colleges. Students interested in math (or math education) PhD programs are often accepted into one of the programs of their choice -- as long as they reach out to faculty at East Bay for support early in their graduate career. Our graduates also have recently been hired for paid internships at Lawrence Livermore National Lab and Berkeley National Lab. Lastly, there's a sizable group who have been hired for full time industry positions in the Bay Area.

The Pure Math Graduate Program trains students in mathematical concepts independent of application outside mathematics.
--M.S. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics Option
The Applied Math Graduate Program trains students in applied math methods with strong emphasis on computational skills.
--M.S. in Mathematics, Mathematics Education for Secondary School Teachers Option
The Math Education Graduate Program is designed for people holding a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics and teaching in middle, junior high, high school, or community college. This option will give students greater expertise in mathematics and mathematics education (curriculum, teaching, learning, assessment, and research).

--have a GPA of at least 2.5 in your last 90 quarter units or last 60 semester units of college level course work
If you do not meet these requirements, you should contact the advisor for your desired program to discuss ways in which you can still meet your goals. Students who do not qualify to apply immediately are often directed to Open University, a program though which people not enrolled as students can take courses at CSULB. Before enrolling, seek advice from your program's advisor.
To apply to the department, complete the appropriate prerequisite worksheet and email it to the graduate advisor for that program. Please see our website for details and contact the graduate advisor of the program you are interested in.

Comments regarding financial support
Grad students have the opportunity to work as Teaching Assistants leading their own activity sections, or as Instructional Student Assistants performing duties such as grading, computer lab support, and so on. Most work 10-15 hours/week, but appointments of up to 20 hours/week are available. TAs earn $30.08/hour.
Comments regarding outcomes students are preparing for, and how successful have they been
Our students prepare for careers in industry and academia. Southern California is home to a rich industrial sector especially in biotech, health care, aerospace/defense, high tech, and insurance/actuarial fields. It also hosts a huge array of academic institutions with abundant opportunities in high school teaching, community college professorships, lectureships at four year universities, and PhD programs.
