Fellows of the American Mathematical Society

Requirements and Nomination Guide

The Fellows of the American Mathematical Society program recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics.

Overview

Contact information will be requested for the following individuals.

  • The Nominator (the person completing the Nomination Form)
  • The Nominee (self-nominations are not allowed)
  • Three (3) Supporting Members

The nominator must provide the following information on the nominee.

  • The MR subject code (MSC) or the Expanded Classification System for JMM 2022 and Beyond code regarding the nominee's mathematical work
  • A curriculum vitae of no more than five (5) pages
  • A statement of cause document of 500 words or less explaining why the nominee meets the criteria of Fellowship (Outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics)

Eligibility

Nominee: To be eligible for nomination as a Fellow for the Class of 2025, the individual being nominated must:

  • be an AMS member for the year during which they are nominated (2024) and
  • have been a member for the prior three years as of July 31 of each year (2023, 2022, 2021)

Nominator: To be eligible as a Nominator, a current year (2024) AMS membership is required. A member can serve in the role of Nominator for no more than two (2) active nominations, either new or carried overduring any nomination cycle. Members of the Fellows Selection Committee may not participate in a nomination, either as Nominator or as Supporting Member.

Supporting Member: Each nomination must additionally be supported by three current (2024) AMS members. Current members of the Selection Committee may not participate in a Fellows nomination either as a principal nominator or as a supporting member.

Please note that a minimum of two (2) of the four (4) individuals making this nomination (i.e., the Nominator and 3 Supporting Members) must be Fellows of the AMS.

All 2024 membership qualifications must be met by March 31, 2024. Any membership payments must be made by close of business on Friday, March 29, 2024 (4:15 p.m. Eastern Time).

Submission

The nomination form with the information/documents requested above, plus the contact and AMS membership information of the nominator, the nominee, and the three supporting members.

Please establish a login at the nomination site. You may need to return to the form at a later date, so save your login information. (Note: This is not your normal AMS login. It is a MathPrograms.org login.) After March 31, the nomination period will be closed and no further changes can be made.

Members may want to fill out the top portion, wait for confirmation of the membership status, and then proceed with the complete nomination. Such confirmation will come via email to the Nominator within two to three business days. Please contact the AMS (see below) if you have not received confirmation within this time period. It is the Nominator’s responsibility to make sure the nomination is completed by the deadline; no extensions may be granted. Please note that AMS member codes are not required but will expedite the process of checking memberships. Current (2024) memberships will be checked for the Nominator and for each supporting member; current (2024) and prior (2023, 2022, and 2021) year memberships will be checked for the Nominee. Nominators will be notified about any qualification problems.

Confirmation by Supporting Members

The three Supporting Members named on the nomination will receive an email verification form (generated automatically, if checked, when the Nominator submits the nomination form). Please mark the "email" box next to each Supporting Member name when you are ready for the Supporting Member email to be sent, and SUBMIT the whole screen. Supporting Members will then click through that email and confirm their support by explaining in a paragraph or two why they are supporting this nomination. After the Supporting Member completes that step, the Nominator will be able to log in to the nomination screen and see a purple date of submission below the name of that Supporting Member. If necessary, Supporting Members can be emailed again on that screen.

Selection

By submitting the nomination, you are nominating the individual ("Nominee") to become a Fellow of the AMS in the current round. This process is competitive and may or may not result in the Nominee becoming a Fellow.

The 2025 Class of Fellows will be chosen by the AMS’ Selection Committee, comprised of 12 members of the AMS who are also Fellows. The target number of new Fellows in a given year is 0.35% of the (three-year trailing average) number of paying members.

Invitations to become a Fellow of the AMS will be issued to those selected on or after September 1, 2024. Any person who is nominated and is not selected a Fellow will remain an active nominee to be considered by the Selection Committee for possible selection for a further two years.
