On continued fractions of given period

Abstract:

A direct proof is given of the fact that, for any $k \in {{\mathbf {Z}}^ + }$, there are infinitely many squarefree integers $N$, where the continued fraction expansion of $\sqrt N$ has period equal to $k$.
