This article discusses the impact that the 19th century French mathematicianGaspard Monge had on perspective drawing. His work deeply influenced technicaldrawing, but few artists followed his ideas. One exception was Johann Hummel,who excelled in perspectival views. The occasion for the article is anexhibition entitled "Mirror Image", at the National Gallery in London until 13December 1998.
