"Not quite the whole story": Review of The Story of Mathematics, byRichard Mankiewicz. Reviewed by Karine Chemia. Nature, 19 July 2001.
Chemia reserves the highest praise of this book for its "191 lavishlyillustrated pages, many of which are magnificent reproductions ofmathematical documents, instruments or visual evidence of mathematicians'work." The reviewer thinks that the author's goal "to bridge the gapbetween mathematics and the 'general culture'" accounts for the compromisedexplanation of mathematics and finds the bibliography to include "an oddselection of titles, without dates or publishers' names". The review isaccompanied by three illustrations from the book, but the reviewer questionswhether they make mathematical ideas more accessible.
