"Magical numbers innature," by John Whitfield. Nature Science Update, 12 October 2001.
This is an interview with Ian Stewart in which Stewart talks about his latestbook What Shape is a Snowflake? and about the role that mathematics plays inother sciences, especially in biology. Along the way, the topics of chaos, symmetry, and bifurcations are touched on. Stewart predicts that a new kind ofscience and mathematics will emerge from the linking of mathematical ideas, such as dynamics and fractals, with the information that comes out of genetics, biochemistry, and DNA.
