"The sum of the parts," by Jonathan Knight. Nature, 31 January 2002.
Knight reviews the play Proof by David Auburn. The reviewer notesthat the play is not intended to educate the audience about mathematics, rather, "mathematics is a theatrical tool, and he uses it with great skill."He notes that Auburn does a good job of giving us an inside look at theculture of mathematics, especially when "Hal tells Catherine it's a 'youngman's game.' Although the general public may know that maths is a fieldstill dominated by men, they may not know that many mathematicians worrythat their best years are quickly behind them." Knight admires how age, gender, and passion---as well as mathematics---come into play.
