Welcome to AMS Open Math Notes, a repository of freely downloadable mathematical works hosted by the American Mathematical Society as a service to researchers, faculty and students. Open Math Notes includes:

An Introduction to 3-manifolds

An introduction to the classical theory of 3-manifolds up to the JSJ decomposition (mid-1970's). The theory of PL least area surfaces (from the 1980's) is used to modernise many of the classical arguments.
